Virtual Dreaming uses a process we refer to as dream incubation, in which the seed of an idea is suggested in the subject. In simple terms this is like going to sleep thinking very hard about a particular issue. The subjects own mind does the rest, with very little external stimulus or influence. In this manner the subject is free to explore their own issues in the most natural manner possible, in their dreams. In essence this is no different to a normal dream, except that the conditions for recalling and being aware of the dream are heightened to their maximum potential.

The human sense of touch involves a very similar process. You reach out to touch something, feel the shape and the texture. How are you doing this? Through the nerves in the tips of your fingers which then transmit electrical impulses back to your brain. Is it hot or cold? Soft? Sharp? Is the sensation pleasurable or rather painful? The Virtual Dream electrical signal can in essence piggy-back along this very signal. The brain interprets the signal in a manner more efficient than any super-computer in existence today and the signal causes neurons in the brain to fire, building upon the suggestion, the electrical signal received, with input from a person’s own memories and imagination.

Yes, the process takes place in such a way that in the majority of cases the dreamer will be aware that they are dreaming and have a degree of control over how they interact with their virtual dream and how that dream unfolds.

The idea for the Virtual Dreaming technology grew out of a postgraduate thesis on Wilder Penfield’s work by Gray McNaughton in 2000. McNaughton devoted the latter part of his thesis to the practical applications of electrical stimulation of the brain. His work put forward the idea of stimulated dreaming as a form of alternative therapy, but McNaughton's work was largely ignored and labelled ‘fanciful dreaming’ itself by many of his peers. He would go on to found the Institute for the Development of Dream Research (IDDR), a group created to further investigate practical avenues for the use of stimulated dreaming.
